Having developed an interest in the meditative traditions and mindfulness based approaches Cecilia was privileged to undertake her qualifying training to become a mindfulness teacher at Oxford under the guidance of Professor Mark Williams and Dr. Melanie Fennell.
She has been quoted as describing this MSt programme of study as 'sitting at the intersection where Buddhist theory and philosophy meets Neuroscience’. Interested equally in the clinical applications of secular mindfulness approaches, and the longstanding tradition that underlies them, the course indulged her curiosity whilst enriching and developing her existing practice.
Cecilia is keenly interested in the place for mindfulness both inside and outside of the therapy room and has experience of teaching mindfulness skills both to individual clients presenting for therapy, and to groups of participants who attend the freestanding workshops and seminars she runs.
Central to her teaching approach is an embodied appreciation of the benefits of an established personal practice, and she is passionate about supporting others to discover and develop an individual practice that works for them. In this spirit and wishing to promote the accessibility and portability of what has (relatively recently) become known as 'mindfulness', she places equal emphasis on the practical applications of mindfulness in everyday life, and formal meditative and contemplative practices that may take place in the dedicated spaces created when we stop and come into stillness.
She has extensive experience of delivering mindfulness training to individuals addressing recurrent or episodic depression and longstanding relationships with anxiety and/or panic, and she has a particular interest in the role of mindfulness in relapse prevention for those in recovery from addictions, compulsive behaviours and eating disorders. She is also experienced in teaching other professionals, who wish to learn skills for themselves, and those they care for.
Cecilia currently offers structured programmes in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) as well as introductory workshops in mindfulness and compassion for those interested in discovering more about these much talked about approaches that each have a significant evidence base. MBCT shares its roots with Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Cecilia's teachings represent a hybrid of the two protocols combining elements that have been well received by those she has taught to date. Just like her practice, Cecilia's teaching is dynamic, interactive and ever-evolving reflecting her own continuous learning, meaning that no two courses will ever be identical.
She hopes to cultivate a sense of community amongst those she teaches, believing in the power of groups, which she has personally experienced as tremendously helpful in solidifying her own practice and consolidating her understanding. She acknowledges with a humble debt of gratitude all those from whom she has learnt: her teachers, and her students.
